Guest Speaker: The Most Reverend & Rt Hon. Dr. John Sentamu, Archbishop
of York
Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa
John Sentamu was born in 1949, near Kampala, Uganda, the sixth of thirteen children.
After reading law at Makerere University, he worked as a barrister and had become
a magistrate in the Ugandan High Court by the age of 24. However, his judicial
independence incurred the wrath of Idi Amin’s regime, and after being arrested,
beaten and imprisoned, Dr. Sentamu escaped to the UK in 1974.
He studied Theology at Selwyn College, Cambridge – gaining a Masters and a Doctorate
– and trained for the priesthood at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, being ordained in
1979.
Having served in a succession of London parishes, Dr Sentamu was appointed Bishop
of Stepney in 1996, and Bishop of Birmingham in 2002. He became the 97th Archbishop
of York in 2005.
As England’s first black archbishop, he is the second most senior cleric in the
Church of England and Primate of England. He is also a member of the House of
Lords and a Privy Councillor. He has for many years been a Fellow of the Royal
Society of Arts.
